Apple could get uber-Retina with the iPhone 5S as rumors point to a display with a pixel density nearing 500 ppi, but this is one rumor that isn't quite adding up.

Rumor: Next iPhone could feature display with twice the pixels of current generation

Despite speculation that Apple’s next iPhone will feature mostly internal upgrades while maintaining the same design as the iPhone 5, a new rumor says there could be one major external tweak in store. According to Chinese siteĀ WeiPhone, the iPhone 5S (or iPhone 6, or whatever it may be end up being called) will feature a display with nearly twice the pixels of the current generation. It will coincide with a move toward a narrower bezel.

The iPhone 5’s Retina Display sports 730,000 pixels. According to this new rumor, the next-gen iPhone will carry 1.5 million. If display size were to remain the same, that would equate to almost 500 pixels per inch. Talk of a narrow bezel design could mean that Apple is upping the size of the display marginally to accomodate those extra pixels while keeping the same body as the iPhone 5. Either way, we’re a bit skeptical.

The increased pixel density would certainly look nice in marketing materials, but it seems more likely that Apple would save a major improvement in the iPhone’s display for further down the road. The company has surprised us before, however, so certainly nothing is out of the question.

It will still be a few months before Tim Cook and crew unveil their latest mobile wonder to the world. All signs point towards early fall as a potential landing date.
