Top 5 iPhone and iPad apps of May 2013

As the hot and humid days of June bear down upon us, we’ll take a few moments to reflect on just a selection of the great new apps to hit the App Store in May. We were treated to a number of long-awaited services, from an official Google Talk client to a new socially-connected version of Hipstamatic. Check out our top five for May 2013 below.

Google Hangouts

With Google Hangouts, the long-neglected iOS support for Google Talk is addressed. The app, which ties into all of Google’s chat services (Talk, Google+, Gmail, etc.) stores your conversations in the cloud, keeping everything synced across devices. Hangouts supports group messaging, video calling, and more in a simple and intuitive UI. [DOWNLOAD]

Analog Camera

The folks that brought us the note-taking app Clear have a go at photo sharing with Analog Camera. Not quite an Instagram competitor, the app offers advanced photo features such as manual focus and exposure as well as a selection of filters to tweak the final image. Once the perfect shot has been captured, easily share photos to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and more. [DOWNLOAD]

Adobe Kuler

It’s the Photoshop eye dropper for real life. Adobe Kuler allows you to take the colors in the real world that inspire you and convert them into RGB values that you can use as part of your digital designs. The app allows you to capture complete color themes using your iPhone camera as well as edit color values to tweak your palette. [DOWNLOAD]

Write for Dropbox (iPad)

Not necessarily new for May, Write fro Dropbox did gain iPad support in its latest update. The simple word processing app stays synced to your Dropbox, allowing you to share documents, store notes in the cloud, and more. On the iPad’s larger canvas Write fro Dropbox becomes a powerful productivity tool. [DOWNLOAD]

Hipstamatic Oggl

Hipstamtic’s Oggl, unlike Analog Camera, does strive to be a direct competitor with the likes of Instagram, bringing a much-needed social element to the longstanding iPhone camera app. Oggl takes advantage of Hipstamtic’s combination of lenses and filters to capture your photos and, much like Instagram, allows you to share your creations with all of your followers. It doesn’t have quite the built-in audience Instagram holds, but for those that prefer the flair of Hipstamatic it’s a must. [DOWNLOAD]
