Apple has just launched the companion app for this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, a sure download for anyone following the show. It features schedules, maps and more for those wandering the halls of the Moscone Center and session videos for those not onsite. But it’s the app’s icon that has us intrigued. Is it our first look at a potential “flat” iOS design?

You’ll notice the icon, which is a simple purple square with Apple logo, lacks any of the shading or flair found in the current crop of iOS icons. Take for instance the Messages icon, which features some graphical accents you won’t find on that of the WWDC app. It’s a basic design that doesn’t stray too far from what we are familiar with, but goes with a subtly different aesthetic.
Perhaps we’re just grasping at straws or reading too much into this, but with the big show right around the corner it’s worth having a bit of fun. What do you guys thing?
