Apple begins offering in-store iPhone 5 display replacements for $149

One of the most common iPhone 5 repairs will now be handled directly by the Apple Store as the company has begun offering display replacement service for $149. For the price, an Apple tech will repair broken or malfunctioning screens onsite as part of an effort to cut down on the cost of device replacement, saving the company over $1 billion per year.

The option to replace a broken display extends to those handsets covered by AppleCare+ as well as those without the extended warranty. In the coming months Apple will introduce additional in-house repairs that will cut down on the number of total iPhone replacements by addressing specific issues with the camera, hardware buttons, and more.

New in-store repair policies could just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to overhauls to Apple’s warranty and service options. There is a good chance we could see a completely revamped AppleCare program based on a subscription model and tied to the customer, not their specific device.

With a memo reaching Apple Store employees today, in-store screen replacements should be available now.
