iPhone vulnerable to charger-induced hardware hack

Apple products, including the iPhone, are known for being rather resistant to attacks by malicious software, but new research suggests hardware vulnerabilities could be used to create headaches for iOS users. A team of researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology claim to have discovered a method of hacking an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch using a modified wall charger.

The charger, which presumably could be disguised as any old iPhone or iPad charging cable, can infiltrate an iOS system without the need for a jailbroken device or any input from the user (or hacker). Exactly how such an attack works and what it is capable of are discussions being saved for July’s BlackHat security conference.

While the folks who uncovered the hack plan to offer countermeasures to prevent such an attack, the most obvious would be to avoid juicing up with a stranger’s charging cable. In reality, the hack is probably of little concern to the everyday iPhone user and could be avoided by using a bit of common sense. Still, it will be interesting to see exactly what the hardware attack is capable of pulling off.
