Report: Apple mulling iPhone trade-in program

iPhones

While new iPhone hardware isn’t expected to be announced until the fall, it appears Apple is planning to adopt a new trade-in policy for mobile devices, a first for the company. A report from Bloomberg indicated that Apple will soon start offering buyers interested in a new iPhone credit when turning in their older model.

Exactly how Apple will value older iPhone handsets is unclear, but the program should help to boost sales by enticing those not eligible for wireless upgrades or simply satisfied with their current phone to upgrade. It also is not clear whether this trade-in program will launch before or concurrently with the announcement of the next generation of iPhone devices, which is expect to happen in September.

Rumors point to Apple launching two new iPhone models: a replacement to the current iPhone 5 along with a new, lower cost model.
