After years of churning through the rumor mill, Apple has finally announced a streaming music contender to battle the likes of Spotify, Pandora, and Google’s Play Music All Access. Dubbed iTunes Radio (not iRadio, as had been speculated), the service will offer up free streaming tunes with an ad-supported model offering automated, personalized radio.
Built directly into the Music app of iOS 7 as well as iTunes on Mac and Windows (as well as Apple TV), those familiar with Pandora will instantly feel familiar with iTunes Radio. You can create stations based on a song or artist, you can choose from Apple’s suggestions based on genre or popular tracks, and you can easily share and purchase music.
A specific rollout date for iTunes Radio was not given, but we can expect it to be here at least in time to coincide with the launch of iOS 7. The ad-supported version is free for all, but iTunes Match subscribers will get access to ad-free radio as part of their yearly fee.
