Native Instrument’s Traktor DJ apps for iPad and iPhone can turn just about atone into a living room DJ, but it has its limitations. With many of the app’s deeper controls buried within menus that take you out of the moment and away from manipulating a song’s waveform — what Traktor DJ does best — creating more intricate mixes can be difficult, to say the least. NI is addressing that concern with the release of the Traktor Kontrol Z1, a standalone hardware mixer and audio I/O device for the iPhone and iPad.
The Kontrol Z1 features knobs and sliders that handle everything from crossfades and individual track volumes to the filters and effects suite found in Traktor DJ. Instead of having to enter a separate dialog to adjust EQs on the fly — a must for any DJ — the hardware controller can handle it while the iOS device remains completely dedicated to the waveform view.
Purists might yearn for vinyl and turntables. Digital DJs might extoll the expansive capabilities of their laptop rig. Still, there is no denying that Traktor DJ for iOS not only offers all the tools needed to throw together a DJ set, but it’s unique interface actually makes it capable of creating mixes that would be unachievable with other tools. The Traktor Kontrol Z1 should make it all the more powerful.
