Rumor: Instagram will get video support at June 20th Facebook event

Facebook is hosting a mysterious event on June 20th with the intent to show off a new product or service, but no one is quite sure just what. With Facebook Home and the “Facebook Phone” already out of the way, signs point toward some sort of new web service. While initial reports hinted at a news reader of some sort, new rumors suggest we might actually see video support added to the Facebook-owned image sharing network Instagram.

The move would come at a time when micro-video sharing services like Vine are rising in popularity. The Twitter-owned app recently launched for Android, seeing its userbase grow to an all-time high. With millions of users already on Instagram, introducing video to go along with images could steal the thunder of upstarts like Vine.

Within the past month whispers have been coming from the Instagram camp that video sharing was indeed in the testing phases, but there was little to suggest an imminent launch. In fact, it was thought that the sharing of 5-10 second videos could launch as a separate app, not rolled into Instagram.

If the 20th does hold an update on Instagram, then we’ll only have to wait a few more days to find out. Either way, it will be interesting to tune in and see what Facebook has in store for the masses next.
