Microsoft has announced that it will bring it’s popular real-time strategy franchise to iOS early next year through a partnership with Japan’s KLab Inc. Age of Empires first launched for PC in 1997 and has seen a number of sequels and spinoffs since, but this would be the first time the historical strategy game has landed on mobile devices.

Plans are to develop the game for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. The partnership is targeting a release before the end of March 2014.

It sounds like we will more or less be getting a port of the original game, not a new entry in the series. Microsoft and KLabs also have no plans to develop any other titles at this time, but that could change based on how things go with Age of Empires.
