Changes in how iOS 7 registers a screenshot mean Snapchat can no longer accurately report when a user has captured an otherwise self-destructing image.

In iOS 7 no Snapchat is safe

The beauty of Snapchat is the timer set on videos and photos. Users can snap away knowing their embarrassing or revealing snaps will only live on in the memory of the recipient, not the memory of their smartphone. Unless, of course, the recipient decides to screenshot a snap. Snapchat deters such behavior by reporting to the sender when another user has saved their sext (or non-sext, but there are fewer ramifications to that), but changes in how iOS 7 handles screenshots means the app can no longer accurately determine when this happens.

As of iOS 7 beta 2, taking a screen shot will not cancel an “active touch.” That is, pressing the on/off/standby and home buttons simultaneously will not override the fact that your finger is placed on the screen. This is exactly how Snapchat determines if a user has taken a screenshot, by receiving a signal that the recipient has removed their finger from the screen (and any Snapchat user knows that keeping your finger on the display is key to viewing a snap).

This means that when an iOS 7 user takes a screenshot of a snap, the sender will not be notified. It could be a major problem for Snapchat if they can’t find a workaround, but something tells me they will in time for the commercial launch of iOS 7. If not, we’re about to enter the wild wild west of snaps.
