I recall a time of begging my father to take me weekly to Burger King to collect the newest Star Wars glass. Now as a sign of the times, the newest marketing trend has migrated from fast food trinkets and traditional store shelves into the App Store.
Here’s a look at a few, fun and free ones!
Despicable Me: Minion Rush (free) is a fantastic app! In the style of Temple Run and Skateboard Surfer, your task is to navigate a Minion, collect bananas, and avoid impending obstacles. This game succeeds in superior graphics, different perspectives while running, riding rockets and sliding in slides while tilting your device, and the hilarious nature of the Minions. The intensive graphics and gyroscope mean that the *minimum requirements for compatible devices begins with an iPhone 4, iPod Touch (4th Gen), and iPad 2.
The first video shows the premise and opening video; the second is my oldest son playing it on the iPad 3 for the first time.
Universal Studios’ Despicable Me 2 is in theaters now.
Another personal favorite movie-related game is the Turbo Racing League app (free). I love racing games, but despise the sensitivity of our beloved idevices in playing them, so I opt for the touch control. While not exactly a Temple Run game, Turbo Racing League reminds me more of a Mario Kart game where you collect apples, race against your own time, race against a ghost-player, etc. on selected tracks. The game gets progressively more difficult and apples are the required denomination for purchasing upgrades (bigger shell, spoiler, color, booster, etc.).
Here’s a video my playing the app from the Thunderstorm review from a few weeks ago.
Dreamworks’ Turbo will be in theaters July 17.
Given the topic, there are another apps worth mentioning that I’ve not currently tried:
Man of Steel * ($0.99) currently has 3.5 / 5 stars
Monsters University: Catch Archie * (free) currently has 4.5 / 5 stars
Iron Man 3 * (free) currently has 4.5 / 5 stars
What are some of your favorite blockbuster movie apps?
