IGZO displays have been growing in popularity, particularly due to their promise of longer battery life for devices that deploy them. It’s not surprising, then, that reports indicate that Apple could use the technology in upcoming iPad and MacBook models.
LG and Sharp are the main producers of IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) displays, and Apple is said to be in talks with both to supply display panels for 2014’s line of MacBook computers. IGZO could possibly arrive sooner for the iPad.
Aside from reduced battery drain, IGZO technology also allows for smaller pixels, which translates to higher screen resolutions on mobile displays. Currently, Sharp is the only company to offer an IGZO-equipped smartphone.
