Apple is investigating whether or not its iPhone 5 played a role in the death of a Chinese woman last week, reports Reuters. Ma Ailun, a 23-year old from the Xingjiang region of China, was electrocuted while talking on her iPhone. The phone was connected to its charging cord at the time, according to her sister.
Responding to the claims, which gained the backing of local police, Apple said “We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter.” As far as we know, this is the first report of such an incident, so it very well could be isolated to this specific case. If faulty manufacturing or design played a part, things won’t look so great for Apple as they attempt to win over a larger Chinese audience.
