The early fall launch of Apple’s next iPhone is approaching quickly, and the latest insider analysis says the company will begin mass production of the phone this month. Anticipating high demand at launch and heading into the holiday season, Peter Misek of Jeffries & Company forecasts initial shipments of between 25 and 30 million iPhone 5S handsets.
After the phones late September/early October debut, shipments in the final quarter of the year look to be even greater. Misek proposes some 50 to 55 million units will ship in time for the holidays. The figure is not without precedent, either. The iPhone 5 is estimated to have sold about 20 million units in its first month of availability.
While high demand is again expected for the followup to last year’s flagship model, the launch of a low-cost iPhone model has the potential to dig into the sales of its premium counterpart. Only time will tell how Apple’s new strategy plays out.
