Rumors have suggested that the iPhone 5S could launch with a built in fingerprint scanner that would add an extra layer of security when unlocking the device. Many assumed it would somehow be built into the home button, which seems logical. A newly uncovered patent, however, reveals where it might really be located.
According to a patent report filed with the USPTO, Apple has devised a method to include a secondary sensor embedded below the display of a smartphone that could serve as a fingerprint reader and/or additional method of input. The method makes sense considering we have seen little sign of fingerprint scanning components in the numerous hardware leaks of the iPhone 5S. It also allows Apple to seamlessly include the new technology without altering the exterior build of the phone.
There has been little evidence to confirm the existence of a fingerprint reader in the iPhone 5S, but rumors persist. A display-embedded scanner would be one way to sneak it by unnoticed.
