China Labor Watch report reveals plastic iPhone, poor working conditions

China Labor Watch, an organization focused on defending the rights of Chinese workers, has released a new report slamming Apple manufacturing partner Pegatron. The news comes after countless stories of  labor abuse by slightly more notorious Apple partner Foxconn, which may or may not have been one of several factors leading to the company’s supply chain diversification.

Of note, however, is confirmation that Pegatron employees are indeed hard at work assembling a low-cost iPhone model comprised mostly of plastic. The CLW report, which spans from March to the beginning of July, mentions the “monotonous” task of placing a protective film on the back of the phone, which could launch as the iPhone 5C, as well as the long overtime hours employees have endured as production ramps up ahead of the device’s release.

While we had little doubt of the phone’s existence or Apple’s plans to release it, take this as yet another confirmation of the inevitable. But let’s not look past the hard work of the laborers responsible for the manufacturing of the handset. There are clearly some issues that still need to be addressed with Apple’s supply and manufacturing partners.
