After electrocution death, Apple offering $10 USB charger trade-in program

Apple is taking no chances when it comes to the case of a Chinese woman apparently electrocuted by her iPhone while using a third-party charging accessory. The company has issued a worldwide trade-in program that nets users an official Apple iPhone, iPod, or iPad USB power adapter for $10.

The price is good for any individual trading in a third-party or “counterfeit” adapter and presenting their device to have the serial number logged (don’t want anyone running a cheap, official power adapter scheme, now, do we?). The program will run through October 18th for any interested in taking Apple up on their offer.

Apple isn’t damning all third-party charging accessories, but it’s easy to understand their predicament. There is little they can do to reverse a series of events that resulted in an accidental death, and while Apple’s product may not have been wholly responsible for the incident the company is doing their best to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
