Philips is expanding their Hue lighting system to include two new options: sizable LightStrips and the LivingColors Bloom, both of which will be available later this week online and at your local Apple Store. The Hue system, which features a wireless base station that receives commands from a smartphone app, combines LED lighting technology with the ability to dim, adjust, or change the color of up to 50 bulbs on a whim.
The LivingColors Bloom is a standalone unit that requires no lighting receptacle. Simply place the bulb on a shelf or floor. LightStrips come as a 6.6 foot roll of shimmering magic that can be cut to size.
As cool as it all sounds, the Philips Hue system still suffers from a rather exorbitant price tag (for light bulbs, anyway). A starter kit, which includes three bulbs and the wireless base station, is currently priced at $199. The Bloom will retail for $80 while the LightStrip sets you back $90. It’s real bleeding edge stuff, and the price is expected to come down eventually for LED lighting tech. If there is any benefit to the added price, bulbs both last longer and save on energy bills. At least they have that going for them.
