Rumors of an iPhone trade-in program have seemed to go nowhere since Bloomberg first broke the news back in June. It seemed logical that Apple would offer the option in their stores alongside the release of new iPhone models, and that seems like exactly what will happen.
According to sources speaking to MacRumors, US Apple Store employees have begun training for a deal that will cut back on the cost of a new iPhone when trading in an older model. Those older models will then most likely be refurbished and shipped off as low-cost options for folks in emerging markets. This repurposing will help Apple’s position in emerging markets without negatively affecting sales of new models like the iPhone 5C in the US.
No exact details have emerged as to when the iPhone trade-in program will go live, but remember the new iPhones currently have a rumored release date of September 20th. Expect Apple to announce plans for the program during their September 10th launch event of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.
