Apple has been in the crosshairs of those looking to profit off of patents and has been the target of 171 lawsuits by "non-practicing entities" since 2009. In other words, Apple has been getting trolled hard.

Apple top target of patent trolls over past five years

Apple is topping yet another list, but we get the feeling the latest will come with mixed feelings. Watchdog PatentFreedom has crunched the numbers on lawsuits initiated over the past five years, and Apple was the top target of so-called patent trolls. The iPhone maker has been sued 171 times since 2009.

It’s a wide margin between Apple and second-place target, Hewlett-Packard, which has been target 137 times by what PatentFreedom prefers to refer to as non-practicing entities (NPEs). The term refers to operations that tend to hoard various patents in order to profit on licensing fees and legal settlements rather than by putting said patents into practice.

Apple has been at the top of the pack for several years, but it was only recently that the company began to truly separate. Up until 2011, the number of lawsuits filed against Apple by NPEs was consistent with those targeting Hewlett-Packard.

Apple’s own target in sundry a patent lawsuit, Samsung, ranks third on the list. Big competitor Google barely cracked the top ten. You can see the full list over at the PatentFreedom site.
