iOS 6.1.4 Jailbroken, and running on an iPhone 5

Cydia

I have to say, this one caught me off guard, and the timing is interesting to say the least. It has been widely accepted that there wouldn’t be a public release of a jailbreak on the current iOS 6.1.4 firmware.  It took nearly 5 months for evasi0n to pawn iOS 6.x, so why waste an exploit when iOS 7 was about to come out of beta and be released in the coming weeks in addition to coming pre-installed on the iPhone 5S & 5C?

Last week the jailbreak community received a little shot in the arm with this tweet from @winocm.

iOS-6.1.3-untethered

Didn’t see that coming.  Ok, so he’s working on 6.1.3, needs some work still, but it’s being worked on.  We already heard from @p0sixninja on whether or not he was working on a jailbreak for 6.1.3

“I will at least wait for 7.0, if not even 7.1.  I’ve … been working on it [a while]. Some of them [vulnerabilities] were ideas I had years ago, but everyone said I was crazy, and I’ve just started looking into them more and realizing I was right…”

Apple patched the evasi0n jailbreak with iOS 6.1.3, so if you purchased your iPhone after then, or you were’t paying attention for some reason and upgraded your iPhone on iTunes to the current firmware, there hasn’t been an untethered jailbreak available.  If you are still on 6.1.2, though, evasi0n will still work.

Today there was some more good news, as @winocm shared the following images of a cydia running iOS 6.1.4 on both AT&T and Verizon networks.

Ok, so what do we know?  Right now all we know is that @winocm has shown that he has an exploit that can run iOS 6.1.4 on “his” iPhone 5.  The likely senario here is that we won’t see a public release of his jailbreak tool for some time yet.  How long, we just don’t know right now.  Would you be interested in a new jailbreak for iOS 6.1.4?  Did the iOS 7 preview make you unhappy of the way iOS is progressing?  Depending on how hard it is to jailbreak iOS 7, this could be the only jailbreak we see for some time.  Please feel free to leave a comment below, and then head on over to the forums and see what everyone else thinks of releasing a jailbreak so close to an iOS 7 update.  Stay tuned for further details as they become available.

    LOL at the title.

You’re everywhere! You don’t like the title?

      • Donovan Shore

No, I seriously laughed at it. And my bad, the description of the post.

“A respected member of the jailbreak community shares a screenshot of iOS 6.1.4 Jailbroken, and running on an iPhone 5, and we are left to wonder–why now?’

“why now”that is the part that got me.

But yeah, I agree, people that don’t want to upgrade to the next phone or OS and still want Jailbreak, then I guess this is good for them.

Well, if it is going to be a long time until an iOS 7 jailbreak, and you happen to be on 7.1.4 already, then this would be your only hope. If he can do it without burning anything that’ll work on iOS 7, which seems likely, WHY NOT release it now?

    • Renkman

Good points, thanks for the comment. The exploit will not work on iOS 7, so no harm no foul. It’s funny, though, to hear people talk about it like if he’s working on_anything_it should be iOS 7 only. As if he’s wasting his time on old news. I guess we really won’t know how long until iOS 7 or 7.x will be jailbroken. Maybe we’ll be luckier this time, and it won’t take too long.

How long till 6.1.4 jailbreak comes out for iphone 5?

    • Renkman

All we know right now is that @winocm is working on the jailbreak, and that he has it running on his own personal iPhone. Releasing a jailbreak to the public is much more intensive, and right now there is no timeline. Stay tuned to iSource, though, because as soon as we know more, I will post about it right here.

    If i have a

    • Renkman

No, that is why the potential for a jailbreak for 6.1.4 is so important for people who upgraded, or bought newer devices with 6.1.4 already loaded.
