My guess is that you can order online on 9/20 just like you would with a pre-order, but who knows how long until it arrives. I would always get up in the middle of the night to place my pre-order to have it delivered the same day it was available, so kinda bummed out by this new procedure.

I agree. You might want to check the Apple Store web site itself, where it says they are going to be available 9/20 – no pre-order.
