Following the lead of other retailers, specifically Apple and the big US carriers, Walmart has announced a new smartphone trade-in program. The program will not begin until September 21st, but will be available at over 3600 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations throughout the US. The trade-in values seem reasonable. A base model iPhone 5 in good condition could net you $300. Other smartphone makers are included in the program as well.
The catch? The credit toward a new phone is only handed over after the customer has signed a two-year contract with AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. Customers can also sign up for Walmart’s own Straight Talk prepaid wireless plan if they wish to do so instead of a traditional wireless plan.
Add this to the list of options for getting rid of your old smartphone in preparation for today’s big announcements out of Cupertino.
