iOS 7 now available for download [UPDATE]

iOS 7

Apple has released iOS 7 to the public this afternoon.  As of 4 pm EST it already has an adoption rate of over 10%.  That’s pretty amazing considering all the bottlenecks associated with an OS launch of this magnitude.  In just 3 hours 10% of the user base has already updated their devices.  Were you one of them?  In case you were planning on updating your device OTA (over the air) make sure you have ~3.4 GB of free space available or you won’t be able to complete the installation.  In addition, it’s always best to have your device plugged in, or have ~50% battery left in case it takes a long time.

Earlier today we shared with you a few tips for preparing your device to upgrade to iOS 7, as well as how to download iOS 7 to your device via iCloud and iTunes. In addition, we also provided you with a beginner’s guide to help navigate around in iOS 7 for the first time–a road map of sorts if you will.

Some of you with developer licenses may already be running beta versions of iOS as well, and are uncertain how to make sure you have the most up-to-date copy of iOS 7 running on your iOS device.  Don’t fret, we have you covered, too.

If you haven’t already, update iTunes to version 11.1.  Make sure you have backed up your device either to the Cloud or through iTunes.  Select ‘restore your device’ to force iTunes to download the newest version.  Then re-install this version with a clean install or restore from your back-up.  That’s it!

Apple’s servers have been hit hard all day today, so be patient, and remain vigilant.  Or you can take the come-back-later approach, and wait until later this evening after the initial blitz of new adopters has thinned out some.  If you do not choose to utilize the OTA update capability, or if it just isn’t working because of the increased traffic, there is a direct download link available as well.

Over the next couple of days we will be combing through the changes and updates that iOS 7 brings to our devices and sharing what we find with you.  If you have any specific questions, tips, or comments please feel free to leave them in the section below or visit the forums and see what everyone else thinks of iOS 7.
