How to: Reduce motion effects in iOS 7

One take-it-or-leave-it feature in iOS 7 is the parallax motion now built into the homescreen. It adds a shiny layer of dimension to an otherwise flat interface by creating a 3D space behind app icons that shifts based on device orientation. It serves little functional purpose, and for some the motion could even cause a mild bout of queasiness. Here’s how to disable it:

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu
  2. Scroll down and tap General
  3. Tap Accessibility
  4. Tap Reduce Motion
  5. Toggle Reduce Motion to ‘on’

And that’s all there is to it. Returning to your homescreen you will find the parallax effect is now gone. To turn it back on, simply repeat the above steps and toggle Reduce Motion from ‘on’ to ‘off.’
