Apple TV setup just got as easy as tapping the set-top box with your phone, and it only uses Bluetooth and WiFi to make it happen. Do we even need NFC at this point?

Who needs NFC? Apple TV can now be setup with a single tap of your iOS 7 device

Turns out there’s more to the version 6.0 update to Apple TV then we initially thought, including the capability to initiate the setup process by tapping it with an iOS 7 device. Using a tandem of Bluetooth and WiFi, touching an iPhone or iPad to an Apple TV during initial setup will sync Apple ID, network info, and language preferences automatically.

A few prompts will need to be completed on the iOS device, but it sure beats trying to use Apple TV’s provided remote to enter the same info. You can check out the full tutorial over at Apple’s support site.

Interesting to note is that this is the sort of functionality normally associated with NFC-enabled devices. The iPhone, however, has never featured that technology. Perhaps Apple is onto something. Why buy into a technology that few are adopting when the same functions can be performed using established protocols like Bluetooth?
