iPhone 5S takes on National Geographic photo spread

The iPhone 5S has an impressive camera. How impressive? What if we told you an entire photo spread for National Geographic, a magazine that prides itself on high quality images of locales far and wide, was shot using only Apple’s latest smartphone?

That’s exactly what happened when photographer Jim Richardson traveled to Scotland with his new 5S. Richardson admits that at first he felt limited by the capabilities of the phone, but as time went on he came to realize it made a fine camera.

This is in no small part thanks to Apple’s decision to move to a larger sensor rather than one that features more megapixels, create a camera with sensitivity to a greater range of lighting conditions. It’s also safe to assume these photos appearing in the pages of National Geographic received more touching up in post than your average smartphone shots.

Either way, Richardson walked away impressed. So was Apple’s Phil Schiller, who tweeted a link to the article. Clever marketing tie-in or true testament to the iPhone 5S’ camera capabilities? Either way, the results speak for themselves.
