Over the weekend Apple gave us an unofficial peek at new icons for their iLife suite for iOS. It was also (briefly) revealed that GarageBand would become a free download supported by paid content.

GarageBand to go the freemium route

Over the weekend, Apple’s updated icon pack for the latest versions of iLife and iWork made a brief appearance on the company’s official site. As expected, iOS 7’s influence was felt. The icons received a colorfully minimalist treatment.

More interesting to note was a mention of GarageBand being offered as a free download as opposed to its current $5 price tag. Apparently Apple’s plans are to offer in-app content purchases for new sounds and instruments, more than compensating for the new pricing model.

Other members of the iLife clan will see new features as well, including iPhoto photo books and iMove Theater. With an Apple event scheduled for October 22nd, we expect to learn more about the updated apps and pricing and pricing model this week. Whoever was responsible for launching the page covering those details early should probably make plans to be elsewhere at that time.
