At a special event today, Apple reiterated the improvements found in the next installment of OS X, from better RAM management and improved battery life for laptops to Finder tabs and file tagging. More importantly, the company announced general availability of OS X Mavericks. The new build of Apple’s desktop platform is available now absolutely free as a download from the Mac App Store.

New features were pranced out on stage in the form of a comprehensive demo showcasing changes in Safari, the introduction of Apple Maps and iBooks for OS X, interactive notifications, enhanced multi-display support, and tighter iOS integration. The update also includes a number of under-the-hood tweaks for integrated graphics and more.

OS X Mavericks, which is the first iteration in the 10.x tree to move away from the big cat naming convention, was originally previewed back in June at WWDC 2013. It has been available for several months as a developer preview. Available for the first time as a free download, the update is designed to work with as many older Mac models as possible, even iMacs dating back to 2003.
