Apple expected to go with at least two suppliers for iWatch OLED displays

Last May we heard reports that Apple had been sampling OLED displays from RiTdisplay for potential use in the iWatch. A new report confirms that the company will be a main supplier of the panels used in production of the wearable gadget, but Apple isn’t putting all of their eggs in one basket. The same report also claims that Cupertino is nearing a deal with LG Display to produce the remainder of iWatch displays.

In fact, Apple could go with three suppliers when all is said and done. Kim Young-woo, analyst at HMC Securities, says Japan Display remains a third option, though their ability to produce the number of displays necessary is limited. Samsung was also an option, but talks are said to have fallen through.

The long-rumored iWatch might finally see a release in 2014 based on the words of Apple CEO Tim Cook during the company’s Q3 earnings call. Cook said Apple plans to introduce new product categories in next year, and it’s not much of a secret that a smartwatch could be among them.
