The first reviews and benchmarks of the iPad Air are starting to roll in, and the results more or less confirm Apple’s claim that the tablet comes in at twice as fast as it’s fourth-generation counterpart. Using the Geekbench 3 benchmarking tool, the folks at Primate Labs concluded that the A7 chip inside the iPad Air is clocked at 1.4GHz and far outperforms older iPad models in both single-core and multi-core testing.

The clock speed is slightly faster than the 1.3GHz of the same A7 chip found in the iPhone 5S. The slight uptick is likely due to a larger battery and the iPad’s ability to dissipate heat better. Both devices take advantage of the 64-bit architecture of Apple’s new A7 chip, a first for a mobile device.
The A7 will also appear in the upcoming iPad mini with Retina display, and chances are it will ship with a similar configuration to the iPad Air. The Air is available starting November 1st at a price of $499.
