Report: Apple adding more manufacturing partners in effort to distance self from Foxconn

When Apple tapped Pegatron to help with the production of the iPhone 5C, the writing was on the wall. The company’s manufacturing efforts had long been associated with Foxconn, but rising tensions and bad press had started to steer the American tech giant away from its Chinese partner. According to a new report from the WSJ, Apple is further expanding its list of suppliers in an effort to continue distancing their brand from the Foxconn name.

The report claims that Apple will shift some iPhone 5C production to Taiwanese operation Wistron, while Compal Communications will help to churn out the iPad mini. The move should help with device yield, but there is no skirting the PR benefits.

Foxconn and Apple have long been seen as almost exclusive partners, giving many reason to blame the iPhone and iPad maker for the plant’s oft-criticized labor practices — including a controversial story by Mike Daisey on working conditions at “Apple” manufacturing plants in China. A fresh start with a more diversified supply chain can only be a good thing.
