iTunes 11.1.3 bug plaguing music synching for some users

After posting a few days ago that iTunes 11.1.3 was available for download for all users who had already updated their Macs to Mavericks, there were a few comments about users experiencing issues with synching their media, especially their music files.  It also seems like this issue was across multiple Apple devices, and not an iPhone or iPad only issue.  In the interest of seeing if this was a widespread problem I started visiting the Apple  Support communities to see if there was a readily available solution.  As with many “bugs” there was definitely a wide range of variations in the bug reporting and understanding of what the source of the problems were.  However, one issue in particular that seemed to be the most common was with users experiencing difficulties synching their music to their iPhone/iPad.  Users reported that it appears that the music is synching but it isn’t available on the device after the synch is complete.  It was as though there is now an unplayable file on the device.  One individual suggested the following, and was thanked by several readers, so I thought I would pass it along as a “possible” solution if you have hit the proverbial brick wall.

– Connect your iPhone to you computer.  If you do not have the Do not automatically synch device when plugged in box checked, immediately cancel any synch that starts.

– Select your iPhone in iTunes, and check the box next to Manually Manage Music and Videos.  A brief synch process begins, let it go.

– Then deselect Manually Manage Music and Videos. iTunes will warn you that this will wipe out the music on your phone and replace it with your iTunes library. Click okapply.

At this point you iTunes should start copying over everything that’s missing because it should wipe out the corrupt music indexes on your device and replacing them.

If, however, this doesn’t work for you, there are many other threads in the Apple Support Communities that might have the answer you’re looking for.  Let us know in the comments section below what issues you may have experienced, and then head over to the iSource forums and share your experience.

My Iphone 4 is at 6.1. I just recently updated my iTunes to 11.1.3 and it wont sync with my phone. I’ve tried to update my Iphone from the setting>generals>software update but nothings happening. Any help?

What does it do when you try to synch your iPhone? Are you plugged into your computer or trying to synch over wifi?

  • Maxx

Renkman, I have tried syncing my 5s, my wifes 5s and my sons 5c and since the 11.1.3 update, nothing will sync via USB or Wifi. I tried what you mentioned above and it worked to transfer my new songs that I purchased. So after doing what you said to do, I bought another song to see if it would sync and the new song wont sync now either. I hope apple fixes this soon as I am getting frustrated that nothing is syncing. I talked with apple support and he said they are unaware of any syncing problems with the new update but I have 2 coworkers that are having the same issue syncing since the 11.1.3 update.

Who cares, you knew what I meant. Typing on a mobile device is not always perfect.

    Potential fix

Apple Ipod touch gen 4 ios 6.1.3, windows 8.0 pc, ITunes 11.1.3
ITunes won’t detect/sync with ipod touch

Try opening control panel and uninstalling all programs published by Apple (amds, apple applications support, bonjour, iTunes, and software update). Open task manager (ctrl alt del) and make sure ipod/iphone service module and iTunes helper are no longer running/deleted. Restart computer and reinstall iTunes. Open iTunes and connect Idevice. Everything should work as it did before update. It worked with my older gen Ipod Touch, hopefully it works with other Idevices.

Yikes, that seems like a PITA. Glad it worked for you, though. Curious if these issues are isolated to PC versus Mac or are occurring in both?

      • UncleUrdnot

I can’t say for sure, I just know from browsing the Apple forums there seems to be many issues on both operating systems stemming from this last update. And every one seems unique. There are a few people who can’t connect to their computer via usb or wifi at all, there are some who can connect but can’t sync, and there are some that can sync but files are blank. I know I tried about 6 different things before stumbling across this one, which is windows only. All I can say is keep browsing the forums for a fix, or hope Apple releases a patch soon.

Thanks for sharing. It looks like this is definitely an issue that has multiple variations of devices and specific problems that aren’t all going to be addressed from one fix. Hopefully Apple will be able to isolate what’s going on and issue an update ASAP. I appreciate you sharing your fix, though it might help someone else out there, too.

I am using a MacBook Pro (Mavericks), iTunes 11.1.3, iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.3. I am unable to sync my music to my iPhone. I have selected to sync “selected playlists, artists,…”. When I update a playlist in iTunes, the results are not shown in the iPhone after a sync. If I remove a song from a playlist in iTunes, it still shows up on the iPhone, but cannot play (it skips to the next song in the playlist). When I add a song to the playlist, it does not show up on the iPhone. If I select another playlist to sync, it will not sync. I have noticed this problem after the iTunes 11.1.3 update.

Hi, I have the same problem and the solution here isn’t working. I just updated my ipad 2 to ios 7.0.3 and itunes to 11.1.3. The syncing will succeed the first time but only for like 100 songs. And everytime i’m trying to sync the other songs it will automatically cancel sync in the 5th song. The song isn’t corrupted because i’ve tried unchecking sync all music and manually add through artist/playlist. It will stop in the 5th song no matter what the song is. I am really frustrated with this because i can’t get my songs to ipad. I’ve tried many, many offered solution but none seems to work. Please help me if somebody have a solution. I’ve tried checking/unchecking manage music manually, etc, etc. Is the problem on my ipad, or itunes?
