Just when rumors of Apple’s hardware plans for their TV unit have started to get interesting, a report claims the company will once again put dreams of a full-fledged television set on hold. The analysts of DisplaySearch have it from Apple’s supply chain that a so-called “iTV” has been put on the back burner as Cupertino focuses on churning out new wearable tech in 2014.
Earlier reports pointed to Apple developing a large screen television product to be introduced in a range of display sizes featuring 4K resolution. While it remains a bit of a pet project for Apple (just like the original Apple TV), the company is simply following the money.
DisplaySearch rightly points out that Apple is looking for hardware that promotes the use of the company’s established content systems like iTunes and the App Store. While Apple TV is tied into these services, it offers no killer feature that would lure customers away from competing products. Add in a relatively long replacement cycler (7-8 years compared to the 2-3 year cycle of smartphones and tablets), and a TV set does not appear to be a profitable industry for Apple.
Instead, Apple will be content to focus its attention toward new iPhone and iPad models as well as the newer wearable technology product segment. Most anticipate this to include the introduction of an iWatch sometime in 2014. Meanwhile, those dreaming of a beautiful 4K Apple television set will have to temper their expectations.
