Initial benchmark scores for the iPad mini with Retina display have surfaced courtesy of Primate Labs’ Geekbench test. The results show a device that matches the performance of the iPhone 5S more than the iPad Air, which was announced alongside the new mini.
All three devices take advantage of Apple’s 64-bit A7 processor, but he clock speed of the chip varies slightly between tablet models. Tests showed that the iPad Air runs at a clip of 1.4GHz, while the latest iPad mini sees its A7 clocked at 1.3GHz. The speed matches that of the iPhone 5S. The single-core and multi-core scores of the Retina mini were on par with the iPhone 5S and slightly lower than those registered by the Air.
Apple is typically mum on processor specifics, so we can only speculate as to their reasoning in using a lower clock speed with the mini. The best explanation likely involves a mix of maximizing battery life and reducing the device’s operating temperature.
