While other virtual pets have made their way to iOS, none have quite married the simple gameplay with the advanced capabilities of the iPhone. Is Hatch the first to do that? This ain’t your childhood’s Tamagatchi, that’s for sure.

Yearning for your virtual pet of yesteryear? Check out Hatch for iOS

Folks of a certain age — an age that at this point just so happens to be part of Apple’s core demographic — will no doubt remember the Tamagatchi and Digimon of their childhoods. Then, the virtual pet was a standalone piece of hardware running simple software that could somehow infiltrate every aspect of your life, often resulting in more than a few confiscated digital pets at the hands of teachers and parents. Hatch takes the concept and updates it for 2013, and the results look promising.

While the generation that grew up with Tamagatchi will find the app somewhat nostalgic if not a decent time killer, Hatch is more properly suited for today’s younger audience, it would seem. The premise is simple enough: raise a virtual creature (called a Fugu), feeding and cleaning up after the animal along the way.

Hatch features some cute animations and an overall solid presentation for what it is, and the app takes real-world cues to create a more immersive experience. Nighttime in real life is nighttime in the game, your Fugu will dance to music playing on your handset, etc.. There appears to be a greater deal of depth than the app’s initial presentation belies.

The folks who created Hatch (who just so happen to be the same people behind productivity app Clear) have chosen to go with a paid model up front rather than the increasingly popular decision to include in-apps purchases as part of a free download. You can grab Hatch now for $1.99.
