PayPal updates app for iOS 7, adds scan-to-pay barcode support

PayPal is following the herd and updating its app today with a new iOS 7 redesign, but they did more than just that. The app also gains several new features, including the ability to scan a QR or barcode to checkout at select stores.

Scanning a barcode has become an increasingly popular interim solution for mobile payments in the wake of NFC’s failure to catch on. Until a better method comes along, using a payment app to scan a code at checkout is a simple method that nearly all smartphone users should be able to take advantage of (without the need for special hardware). PayPal jumps on the bandwagon here, and the support of the payment service could do wonders to encourage more retailers to support this method of payment.

Version 5.2 of the app also adds the ability to withdraw money to a bank account. Users can do so quickly and easily under the Wallet tab.

You can check all that’s new with PayPal by downloading the free app now. The iTunes/App Store link is below.
