Square has just announced a revision of their titular card reader, redesigned inside and out for a thinner, more accurate payment peripheral. In order to shave down the footprint of the new reader, Square custom designed many of the internal components, including the actual magnetic readhead.
Square will be outfitting 30,000 stores with the new reader early next year, but individuals can snag one free of charge by signing up with Square. And for free, it’s definitely worth upgrading over the previous iteration.
