Ah, it’s December and time for all the “Best of…” lists. Three of Apple’s newest products have made Time’s list of top gadgets from 2013, the most from any single company. Where do they rank?

iPhone 5s, new iPads make Time’s ‘Gadgets of the Year’ list

Time’s Top 10 Gadgets of 2013 features devices from Nokia, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Only Apple, however, earned two entries. With a strong showing at the tail end of 2013, is anyone surprised? The iPhone 5s came in fifth on Time’s list (a ranking we think is a bit low), while the one-two punch of the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display ranked second.

Time praised the iPhone 5s for being more than the typical “s” upgrade. In particular, the handset’s dual-LED flash and Touch ID were named as reasons why the latest flagship from Apple was the highest ranking smartphone on the list.

Time calls the latest iPad updates “the best tablet you can buy” and ranks it as much. The publication was particularly impressed with the reduction in size the iPad Air sees over previous 9.7-inch models, but notes the Retina iPad mini offers a nearly identical experience in an even smaller package.

The only device to rank higher than both is Google’s Chromecast (check out a review from our pals at Phandroid), the $35 attempt at revolutionizing the way we consume and stream media. It’s a novel idea, and a truly cool gadget. It might even be deserving of the spot.

Don’t get me wrong. Apple’s latest gear is some of the best tech this year, but the company definitely wasn’t breaking the mold. Where would you place the new iPads and iPhone 5s? Do you agree with Time’s rankings? Here’s the full list:

  1. Google Chromecast
  2. iPad Air and iPad Mini
  3. Oculus Rift Development Kit
  4. Pebble Smartwatch
  5. iPhone 5S
  6. Xbox One
  7. Kindle Fire HDX
  8. Nest Protect
  9. Leap Motion Controller
  10. Nokia Lumia 1020
