The iPhone is big in Japan. How big? When BCN, a company that tracks the sale of consumer electronics in Japan, crunched the data, Apple’s smartphone accounted for 12 of the top 20 smartphones in the country. Of those, the top 9 were all iPhones.
The ranking counted carrier-specific models and storage capacity variants as individual devices, but the iPhone 5s occupied ranks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 12, and 14 while the iPhone 5c held spots 4, 8, and 20. Even if all handsets were to be consolidated, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c would still be the top two smartphone in Japan.
Apple has steadily been increasing its presence in Asia, with the iPhone seeing a huge spike in popularity in Japan after the handset became available on NTT DoCoMo with the launch of the 5s and 5c. NTT DoCoMo is Japan’s largest carrier, and Japan has quickly risen to become the Apple’s fastest-growing market.
