What would you pay to own a little piece of history? The iPhone changed the mobile landscape forever when it first launched, but before that could happen Apple went through an entire development and prototyping process. One of those prototypes recently showed up on eBay where it sold for $1500.

The phone, which by all means looks legit, doesn’t run any version of iOS as we know it. Instead, it features special software designed to test the various functions of the handset. It’s a rare peek behind the scenes and one at least one buyer valued to a high degree.

A smart investment or the impulse buy of a fanboy? Who knows, but it’s not every day a first generation iPhone prototype surfaces.
