Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company will be tasked with producing the Touch ID fingerprint sensors for Apple’s next-generation iPhone, according to a new report from Digitimes. Sources close to the matter say production will begin at TSMC’s 12-inch fabrication facility utilizing a 65nm process.

TSMC is also responsible for the fingerprint sensor found in the iPhone 5s, which is manufactured at the plant’s 8-inch fabrication lines. Different this go around, TSMC will also manufacturer the sensor’s backend components. For the 5s, these elements are outsourced to various TSMC partners.

Controlling both aspects of the manufacturing process will allow TSMC to control the yield of fingerprint sensors more closely, an aspect of iPhone 5s manufacturing that led to initial stock shortages. The new sensors are expected to go into production during the second quarter of this year.
