AT&T is making it possible for subscribers under traditional two-year service contracts to switch to a new Mobile Share Value plan and gain access to early upgrades via their Next program. Eligible subscribers will be able to opt out of their current contract after six months and take advantage of a $0 down smartphone upgrade.
The catch? The offer only applies to users signing a contract prior to January 18th of this year. As long as that criteria is met, a subscriber need only wait six months to get out of their two-year commitment. Customers will still have to stick with AT&T, but for those looking to escape altogether we hear at least one other carrier is willing to buy out the early termination fees.
AT&T’s goal is clear: get as many customers as possible moved from a subsidized business model to a payment plan, a goal that jives with recent comments from CEO Randall Stephenson. AT&T seems set on eliminating subsidies which they claim they simply can no longer afford.
