Verizon growth shows carrier is in no hurry to adapt to changing wireless sales model

In the fourth quarter of 2013 Verizon added 1.7 million subscribers. This positive growth is a continuation of a trend that has seen Verizon’s subscriber count rise to 102.8 million subscribers. Meanwhile, somewhere in the background, T-Mobile is making noise about shaking up the entire wireless industry.

And it’s true. T-Mobile’s tactics — slashing service costs, eliminating subsidized devices, enabling early upgrades — have put AT&T and Sprint on notice. But Verizon? Verizon, while adjusting slightly to market pressures with the introduction of their Edge early upgrade program, has seemed the least affected.

Verizon with its massive LTE and 3G coverage map blanketing 97 percent of the US population has little incentive to change. The carrier has built up a loyal base of subscribers while continually adding new customers. Just about the only complaint most can muster in regards to the carrier affectionately known as Big Red is that the cost of service is a bit steep.

Perhaps T-Mobile’s strategy will eventually trickle up to Verizon. If three of the United States’ top four wireless carriers drastically change their service model, Verizon will have no choice to follow suit. But for a company that added 8.8 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of last year (88.9 percent of all activations), an accessible, fast, and reliable LTE network will continue to be a big draw.
