JDSU has released the results of a 2013 study on smartphone and tablet data consumption and it’s official: iOS users are a data hungry group. The iPhone 5s was far and above the leader in smartphone data consumption in both developed and developing markets, proving that premium smartphone users demand premium data.

While the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display were released too late in the year to be included in the survey, the fourth-fen iPad ranked second behind iPhone 5s followed by a couple of Android devices. After that, it’s all iOS until we reach a couple of Samsung handsets. Devices making the list: the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, third-gem iPad, and iPhone 4s.

Interestingly (but perhaps not surprisingly), the iPhone 5c ranks behind the older iPhone 5. The iPad mini does not make the list at all.
Some notes on the survey: data was collected over a 24-hour weekday in a “tier 1” European market. An identical period was studied in a developing market for comparison. JDSU used iPhone 3G data consumption as a baseline (100 percent). The survey ignored data usage for devices with less than 1,000 users.
The results jive more or less with what we might expect. Devices targeting lower price point typically see less data consumption (the iPhone 5c, iPad mini, and older iPads) while top tier devices typically demand more data. So what is the correlation? One assumption is that users that can afford more expensive devices can afford to use more data. The other is that better devices create a more engaging experience, therefor drawing users to consumer more data. Perhaps it’s a combination of both, neither, or any other number of factors.
