Apple has yet to formally roll out iOS in the Car despite announcing the initiative at last year’s WWDC as part of the big iOS 7 unveil. It turns out a mostly functional version of the in-car interface is hidden deep within the current public release of iOS 7, and developer Steven Troughton-Smith made a quick video to demonstrate.

What we see emulated on a computer is a secondary display that interacts fluidly with an iPhone. Navigation is the highlight, with the “car” display responding to various selections on the “iPhone,” from location searches to requests for directions.

From what is seen here, iOS in the Car has a lot of potential. As with most things Apple, it looks like it could “just work,” making a no-nonsense, intuitive connection between mobile and automobile. We imagine Apple is still refining the system around the edges, and we’d like to see examples of some of the platform’s expanded functionality (iTunes control, media playback, etc.).

Current speculation suggests Apple will officially unveil iOS in the Car as part of the iOS 7.1 update, which is expected to launch in March. When we will see the first iOS-enabled cars rolling off the lots is a slightly trickier question to answer.
