Apple may face fines for blocking LTE access in Belgium

Apple could be facing a fine as Belgium’s Council of Minister has declared it illegal for mobile phone makers to block access to 4G LTE networks. The issue stems from Apple’s preference to do business with Mobistar while dragging out the iPhone certification process for other carriers in the region.

The issue is further compounded by the fact that Mobistar currently does not operate a functional 4G network. Proximus and Base, two competing providers, do offer LTE coverage. Newer iPhone models featuring LTE connectivity, however, are blocked from accessing these networks.

According to Base’s corporate affairs manager Coralie Miserque, iPhones comprise over half the 4G-ready phones in the hands of Belgian users. In her opinion, Apple is showing preference to Mobistar while creating hurdles for competitors.

The amount Apple could owe in fines, if any, has yet to be determined. Even if the company is forced to pay they could choose to continue to ignore the regulations in order to preserve their relationship with Mobistar.
