Apple’s struggle with iOS in the Car

After lauding the new platform at WWDC back in June of last year, iOS in the Car has ben relegated to a blurb on Apple’s site and a series of rumors and leaks. A new report says internal organizational issues could have led to that WWDC reveal never happening at all.

According to The Information, the team behind iOS in the Car had to fight for stage time alongside the abundance of other new features introduced with iOS 7. The issue? Apple has had trouble finding a home for the product among its various hardware and software teams. Think of it as the red-headed stepchild to iOS (no offense to red-headed stepchildren).

Apple has touted the feature as coming soon, and recent indications are that a launch could occur as part of the release of iOS 7.1. The core of iOS in the Car has been unearthed from deep within both the current consumer-ready iOS 7 build and beta editions of 7.1. The interface has been noticeably tweaked between versions.

The supposed internal struggle to support iOS in the Car contrasts public statements made by CEO Tim Cook citing the importance of automotive connectivity in Apple’s future plans.  Even with an official release potentially occurring this spring, car makers have yet to announce their own roadmap for iOS in the Car-enabled vehicles.
