As the carrier continues to find ways to entice new and existing customers in the face of surging competition, AT&T has introduced a new version of their Mobile Share plan. The family plan provides users with unlimited talk and text plus 10GB of shared data each month for a price that breaks down like this:
- 2 lines: $130
- 3 line: $145
- 4 lines: $160
- 5 lines: $175
Each additional line beyond that (up to 10) can be added for as low as $15/month. The catch? To keep prices this low customers will need to opt into an AT&T Next plan when purchasing a smartphone (or go with a feature phone instead).
In reality, AT&T is charging $100/month for 10GB of data plus $15 each for AT&T Next smartphones, but users can get as low as 300MB for $20 (though plans below the 10GB level cost the user $40 per line) or up to 50GB for $375. Confused at all?
AT&T’s revamped family plan follows the introduction of Sprint’s Framily plan, which offers users the ability to add up to 10 lines for as low $25 each per month. AT&T’s new service does not include feature’s like separate billing, a highlight of Sprint’s offering.
The bottom line is clear: when competitors aggressively fight to price each other out, the customer wins. And that, folks, is exactly why Sprint will have a hard time getting the necessary approvals to acquire T-Mobile and disturb the balance created by a four carrier system.
